A Safer Alternative to Dryer Sheets

Washing clothes is a part of life and a chore most of us dread and due to modern conveniences most of us use a dryer instead of a clothesline. When using a dryer you probably throw in a dryer sheet or two to make your clothing smell nice and fresh and to avoid static.

One of the most toxic things we do, on a regular basis, is use fabric softener or dryer sheets (we will talk about laundry detergent another day). Those perfume-laden (even fragrance-free) sheets and liquid are full of toxic chemicals. Chemicals that infiltrate the clothes we wear, which in turn get on our skin and absorbed into our body. There are no laws in place which require the manufacturers of these products to list all the chemicals used, so don’t pick up a box of dryer sheets or fabric softener and expect to see a list of ingredients like you would a box of cereal. Some of the most harmful ingredients in dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener alike include benzyl acetate (linked to pancreatic cancer), benzyl alcohol (an upper respiratory tract irritant), ethanol (linked to central nervous system disorders), limonene (a known carcinogen) and chloroform (a neurotoxin and carcinogen).

What is a safer alternative to dryer sheets? Organic wool dryer balls these balls  do not contain toxic chemicals, they help reduce waste, they save you money over time and actually reduce the amount of time it takes for your clothes to dry. If you miss the fresh scent of your dryer sheets just add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil to your dryer balls, I normally use lavender oil because it’s one of my favorites but any EO will do the trick. You can purchase organic wool dryer balls on amazon or any health store should carry them; a pack of 6 normally costs less than $20.00. I only use two balls at a time, each balls lasts about 2-3 years depending on how often you use them.
